Art is a way that we express ourselves, not just by creating it, but also by collecting it. The art that you surround yourself with says a lot about who you are – your taste, your personality, your sensibility.
The term ‘art collection’ often drums up ideas of the extremely wealthy, investing in multi-million dollar pieces that would hang just as well in a museum as it would in a mansion. But an art collection doesn’t have to be expensive or pretentious. Art is for everyone. Art inspires. Art makes people happy. If you’ve always been interested in starting an art collection of your own, here are some tips to help you begin collecting.
What Type of Art Speaks to You?
There are many forms of art, and understandably there will be some types that appeal to you and some that don’t. You may love paintings and prints, or prefer to branch out beyond these popular art forms. If you consider the handmade quilts you inherited from your great-grandmother to be beautiful pieces of authentic artwork, why not hang them up on your walls instead?
Figure out what type of art speaks to you. When art makes a connection, makes you think, and makes you feel something on a new level, you’ll know that is the type of artwork you want to invest in.
What Do You Want Your Art to Say?

Just as the art speaks to you, it will also speak to others. Each individual piece, as well as the collection as a whole, will convey a message. Sometimes it’s helpful to first think about what message you want to project, and let that guide you when you buy art. Here at Poseytude, we prefer art that inspires positivity, creativity, and happiness. What do you want your collection to express?

Why Not Incorporate Your Own Artwork?
One way to make your art collection highly personalized is to incorporate your own work. Are you an avid amateur photographer? Love to sketch small designs? In this digital day and age drawings, paintings, and photos can be added to just about anything. You can go the traditional route and frame your artwork, or you can get more creative with how you incorporate it into your collection.
Start small, with pieces that you personally connect with and then grow your collection from there. Now get out there and enjoy immersing yourself in art!
Have you recently started an art collection? What would you add to this list?
